Kootenai River Derailment Update | BNSF

Final locomotive removed from river near Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Date
Jan 28, 2020

BNSF crews worked diligently over the weekend to remove the final locomotive from the Kootenai River near Bonners Ferry, Idaho, as part of our remediation efforts after the Jan. 1 derailment. To accomplish this, a team of divers placed air bags below the locomotive so that it was able to float to a more accessible location on the other side of the river. The divers also searched the river to remove any remaining debris.

Previously, on Jan. 13, another locomotive was pulled onto an extraction ramp next to the railroad track, and then lifted by crane onto the tracks.

We continue to work closely with Idaho Department of Environmental Quality and other agencies to ensure the protection of the surrounding environment. The site will be returned to its former condition. The operation is expected to be completed in early February.
