Safety and Security

As a leader in railroad safety, we recognize that a safe and secure railroad network is essential to our nation's future and important to our stakeholders. U.S. railroads have some of the lowest injury and accident rates in the transportation industry. The accident rate is significantly lower than that for the trucking industry.

BNSF's vision is to operate injury- and accident-free, and every day we are working to make that vision a reality through our safety programs, training and technology.

BNSF Safety Vision

We lead the industry in many areas of safety. Our grade crossing incident rate has consistently been the lowest among major railroads for many years. We are also a leader in developing new technology to improve the safety of our operations. We believe every accident or injury is preventable. Our vision is that BNSF will operate free of accidents and injuries. Here are some of the ways we work to achieve that vision:

  • We foster a culture that makes safety our highest priority and provides continuous self-examination as to the effectiveness of our safety process and performance.
  • We have a work environment, including the resources and tools, that is safe and accident-free where all known hazards will be eliminated or safeguarded.
  • We promote work practices and training for all employees that make safety essential to the tasks we perform.
  • We empower our work force to take responsibility for personal safety, the safety of fellow employees and the communities we serve.
