Bulk Sugar Hopper Cars: Reporting Rejected Equipment Rule Change Effective January 1, 2018

Dec 11, 2017

In our ongoing efforts to support greater efficiency, BNSF is implementing a policy change regarding the notification of rejected equipment. Beginning January 1, BNSF will assess a $500.00 per car charge applicable to a shipper moving bulk sugar in covered hopper cars that fails to notify BNSF through BNSF-provided electronic applications of the rejection of BNSF-owned, leased or controlled equipment furnished for loading.

Exception: With prior permission from BNSF Equipment Management Department, a shipper can utilize alternative reporting processes. Customers can contact BNSF Equipment Management at (888) 428-2673 (option 4, 4, and then 1).

The shipper that ordered the rejected car will be considered the responsible party for reporting equipment as defective, dirty or otherwise unsuitable for loading.

This policy change is included as Item 3262 in the updated BNSF Rules Book 6100-B (must be logged in to the Customer Portal for viewing).
