Preparing for Hurricane Delta

Date
Oct 7, 2020

BNSF is preparing for another hurricane expected to impact portions of the Gulf Coast. Hurricane Delta, currently located off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula with maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour, is forecast to strengthen as it moves northward through the Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center forecasts that Delta will make landfall between Houston and New Orleans as early as Friday afternoon.

Flood gates in and around New Orleans are being closed today, which affects traffic interchanging with eastern carriers. Due to these gate closures and flooding concerns, BNSF is holding all New Orleans-bound trains from moving into the area and re-routing traffic as needed.

We have activated an around-the-clock command center, and our operating teams are in communication with other rail carriers as well as local, state and federal emergency personnel. Additional resources have been staged at various locations to quickly address any impacts to the network.
