To: BNSF Centerbeam Customers
In a recent Safety Alert, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) highlighted ongoing rule violations in the securement of cables on empty centerbeam cars. As part of BNSF’s commitment to keeping shipments safe and moving as efficiently as possible, customers are required to comply with AAR Open Top Loading Rules Manual, General Rule 22.4.3 which states that “all cables must be properly secured per manufacturer’s recommendation prior to car movement.”
The failure to comply with Rule 22.4.3 may result in the rejection of cars, consignees being charged for costs associated with reworking the improperly wound cables on empty centerbeam cars, personal injuries, and/or derailments.
BNSF can provide contact information for load adjustment contractors who have been certified in the AAR Open Top Loading Rules and who carry the mandatory insurance to work on BNSF property.
Open Top shippers can also visit the AAR’s free online library at my.aar.org/otlr to view selected volumes of the Manual as well as download the entire PDF of the book, individual documents and implemented circular letters.
Your business is important to us. Thank you again for choosing BNSF as your transportation service provider.
