BNSF Transcaer Training Efforts Continue in Wyoming and Montana

Fort Worth, Texas, Sept. 29, 2010 :

BNSF Railway will continue its training tour in Wyoming and Montana to help emergency responders prepare for hazardous materials incidents. The training efforts will begin in Casper, Wyo. Saturday, Oct. 2 - 4 with Casper Fire & Rescue. Following the Casper training, the BNSF TRANSCAER training car will head to Montana for additional sessions.

The Montana training tour, beginning in Laurel, Mont. on Oct 9th, is a joint effort with Montana Rail Link and Montana TRANSCAER. The training is designed to provide the surrounding county fire and emergency responders at each location hands-on experience with the specialized railroad tank car. Training will demonstrate how to deal with possible leaks or spills. The remaining sessions will be held at Livingston, Oct 12; Helena, Oct 14, 15, 16; Missoula, Oct 18, 19 on MRL, and in Libby, Montana on Saturday, October 23rd.

"We are excited to be offering this training to the emergency responders in Wyoming and Montana," said Allen Stegman, general director of BNSF's environmental department. "By working together, we are able to better educate public responders about the resources BNSF provides in the event of any hazardous material emergency. This helps us all to create a safer community."

The news media is invited to cover these training exercises. Morning sessions will be offered and are geared for volunteer fire fighters that are trained to the OSHA Awareness, or Operations level. These sessions are designed to help responders learn more about the railroad and rail equipment, including knowledge of communications and safety when responding to a rail incident. The BNSF hazmat team has trained more than 2300 emergency responders in 15 states so far in 2010, including Ariz., Calif., Ill., Kan., Neb., Minn., Miss., Mont., N.D. Ore., S.D., Wash. and Utah.

BNSF conducts the training sessions with the support of TRANSCAER, a voluntary, nationwide community outreach program that helps communities prepare for and respond to a possible hazardous material transportation incident. TRANSCAER volunteers consist of representatives from chemical producers, distributors, railroads, tank truck shippers, first responders and government agencies. TRANSCAER is sponsored by the American Chemistry Council, Association of American Railroads, Chemical Educational Foundation, CHEMTREC®, The Chlorine Institute, Inc., and National Tank Truck Carriers, Inc.
