The BNSF Foundation (BNSF) today announced it is donating $100,000 to the American Red Cross for on-going relief efforts for the tens of thousands of people affected by the tornado that struck Joplin, Mo. and other areas of Missouri and Kansas on May 22, 2011.
More than 120 people lost their lives and 2,000 structures were leveled when the deadliest single U.S. tornado in about 60 years cut a six-mile path through Joplin.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people who have lost family members, friends, and homes during this tragic weather event," said John Ambler president, BNSF Foundation. "We are grateful to the many who have responded to this emergency and to be able to provide some assistance to those suffering from this devastating event."
BNSF's contribution is being made through the Greater Ozarks Regional Chapter of the American Red Cross in Springfield, Missouri.
While significant funds have been raised, there is still more relief needed. To contact the American Red Cross or donate online, visit www.redcross.org.
